Recommendations for fever in children
How to monitor a fever and when to contact a paediatrician.
Fever is a common symptom of childhood infections and does not always indicate a serious condition on its own. Monitor your child's behaviour, fluid intake, breathing and response to care.
Offer your child fluids, dress them lightly and do not force them to eat if they have no appetite. Fever-reducing medicines are used according to the child's age, weight and a doctor's advice.
An examination is needed if your child is very sleepy, has difficulty breathing, has a rash that does not fade under pressure, is vomiting persistently or is a very young infant.
Note: this information does not replace an examination by a paediatrician when a child has significant symptoms or their general condition is deteriorating.
