Infections
RSV and bronchiolitis
Brief guidance for parents of infants and young children during the RSV season.
RSV infection can cause bronchiolitis, particularly in infants and young children. Symptoms include a runny nose, cough, fever and difficulty breathing.
It is particularly important to watch for rapid breathing, the skin pulling in between the ribs, reduced fluid intake and changes in skin colour. Seek medical assessment as soon as possible in these situations.
Prevention includes regular handwashing, avoiding contact with people who have symptoms of a respiratory infection and ventilating rooms.
Note: this information does not replace an examination by a paediatrician when a child has significant symptoms or their general condition is deteriorating.
