Scarlet fever in nurseries
Recognising a rash, fever and sore throat in children attending childcare or school.
Scarlet fever is a bacterial infection most often seen in school-age and preschool children. Typical symptoms may include fever, a sore throat, a rash and general weakness.
If scarlet fever is suspected, an examination is important to assess the child's condition and determine the next steps. Do not start treatment on your own without a doctor's advice.
Children return to nursery or school according to their doctor's advice, after their condition improves and with hygiene measures followed both at home and in nursery.
Note: this information does not replace an examination by a paediatrician when a child has significant symptoms or their general condition is deteriorating.
