Viral stomach infections
How to monitor fluid intake, general condition and signs of dehydration in children.
Viral stomach infections in children most often cause vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, fever and reduced appetite. Monitoring the child's general condition and fluid intake is the priority.
Offer your child small amounts of fluid frequently, without forcing food during the first hours of symptoms. Pay particular attention to a dry mouth, infrequent urination, marked sleepiness and weakness.
An examination is needed if your child cannot keep fluids down, has blood in their stool, severe pain or signs of dehydration, or if symptoms are worsening quickly.
Note: this information does not replace an examination by a paediatrician when a child has significant symptoms or their general condition is deteriorating.
